Paperweights' tiny worlds in glass capture a Beaverton woman's heart and home
When Keren Hoover was 15, her parents returned from a trip to Italy with three paperweights for her. The small glass orbs were millefiore-style paperweights, one of the most popular designs, holding a diminutive glass world of hundreds of tiny flowers (mille fiori is Italian for "thousand flowers").That gift in 1969 was the start of a collection that now has close to 300 solid glass orbs occupying bookshelves, counters and tabletops all over Hoover's two-story home in Beaverton.
Some line white shelves with spotlights; others gather on translucent shelving. On one small stand, a paperweight is highlighted from below with a light that can be programmed for different colors or different patterns.
It's a big collection, but Hoover says it started small and exploded on her.
