NHL dignitaries fill Comerica Park to announce Winter Classic
Chicagos Wrigley Field. Bostons Fenway Park. Ann Arbors Michigan Stadium.
Consider it a hat trick of iconic stadiums for the NHLs Winter Classic.
The league made one of its worst-kept secrets official this morning: The Big House will host the sixth Winter Classic on Jan. 1, 2013. The Detroit Red Wings will play the Toronto Maple Leafs, a matchup of Original Six teams that will excite fans of the Winged Wheel who wish they meet far more often and lead to a stream of Canadians crossing the Ambassador and Blue Water bridges.
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman made the announcement at a news conference in Comerica Park, the baseball stadium run by Wings owner Mike Ilitch and the site for a second outdoor rink and series of alumni, college, minor league, junior and youth games. There also will be open skating. Bettman was joined by Ilitch, Mayor Dave Bing and plenty of NHL officials today.
