New Smyrna, Daytona join website to help identify suspects

Local law enforcement agencies regularly seek the public's help in putting names to faces. Now they are turning to the Internet to make that happen.
The New Smyrna Beach and Daytona Beach police departments have joined IDTHISPERSON.COM , a free website where law enforcement personnel can post a photograph of a criminal suspect who they cannot name. The reward for people who identify someone on the site is a $25 gift card, said New Smyrna Beach investigative Sgt. Eugene Griffith.
"We signed up for it on Friday," he said.
They are not alone.
"We have already posted some photos," said Daytona Beach Police spokesman Jimmie Flynt. "We haven't gotten any hits yet, but we have posted some."
Griffith expects his investigators will start posting suspect photographs by the end of the week.
He said the website acts as a clearinghouse for photographs of suspects who can't be identified. By posting images on the site, it takes advantage of the millions of people who use the Internet with the hope someone will be able to put a name to the face.
