I'm trying to design a 1024x768 fixed page via photoshop & dreamweaver (I'm fairly new to both products and web design in general). Id like to have a gradient background on the outside my template. Should I just make a very slim gradient Jpeg x 768

All you would need is a sliver of the 1024 image and set it so it can be tiled in the pattern you want. If the pattern changes throughout the whole 768px height, then you will have to go with the full size. If the colors have a repeat point, then that's
