Paid advertising on websites is becoming more and more popular as businesses and individuals are looking to tap into the expanse of the world wide web. However there is the problem that adverts can turn visitors off, by being either too obvious or flashing.
Advertising on the internet goes further than just paid adverts on a website, Jimmy Kimmel earns nearly $2 million a year from his YouTube page (which is based around snippets of 5 minutes from his shows) based around targeted advertising. Louis CK (another American comedian) netted over $1 million over a 12 day period in December 2011 through selling a download clip for $5 (sidestepping advertising, packaging and marketing).
Google has it's whole revenue stream based around targeted subtle adverts that are designed into the body of the search engine and generate a nice income for them.
Social media websites (such as Facebook, LinkedIn etc.) are all built around paid advertising and as their captive audience is so large, are a great platform for using targeted adverts.
